When it comes to learning, especially in the realm of Agile and Scrum, the traditional classroom model often leaves much to be desired. I’ve seen it time and again: participants leave with their heads filled with information, yet only retain about ten per cent of it two weeks later. This is where immersive learning comes into play, and I’m excited to share my thoughts on this transformative approach.
What is Immersive Learning?
At its core, immersive learning is about bridging the gap between theory and practice. Instead of the conventional two-day or four half-day classes, immersive learning connects the content directly to the participants’ real-world experiences. This is not just about delivering a set of slides; it’s about weaving the participants’ stories into the fabric of the learning process.
- Real-World Relevance: In traditional classes, we often rely on case studies that may not resonate with everyone. Immersive learning flips this on its head by allowing participants to bring their own challenges and contexts into the classroom. This means that the learning is not just theoretical; it’s applicable and relevant to their day-to-day work.
The Structure of Immersive Learning
So, how does this immersive approach work in practice? Instead of cramming everything into a few consecutive days, we spread the learning over multiple sessions. For instance, in a typical Professional Scrum Master (PSM) course, we might have seven half-day sessions, each spaced out over a week. This structure allows for:

Debriefing Sessions: Each session begins with a debrief of the previous assignment. This is crucial. It’s a time for participants to share their experiences, discuss challenges, and learn from one another. Imagine having six people in a class, each bringing their unique insights to the table. This collaborative environment fosters deeper understanding and connection.

Assignments with Real Impact: After the debrief, we introduce new content, followed by an assignment that participants can implement in their own organisations. For example, a product owner might be tasked with defining what “value” means for their business. This isn’t just an academic exercise; it’s a chance to bring real change to their workplace.

One of the key differences between musicians and martial artists is their commitment to practice. In the same vein, immersive learning emphasises the importance of applying what you’ve learned. Each week, participants have the opportunity to try out new concepts and techniques in their own environments. This iterative process not only reinforces learning but also builds confidence in applying Agile principles.
- Feedback Loops: When participants return to the next session, they can share their findings and experiences. This creates a feedback loop that enhances learning and allows for continuous improvement. If a participant discovers that their organisation doesn’t even have a clear definition of value, we can explore strategies to uncover that information together.

I genuinely believe that this immersive learning format provides far greater value to students. It’s not just about filling their brains with knowledge; it’s about ensuring they can connect that knowledge back to their work. This approach helps participants navigate the complexities of their corporate environments and equips them with the tools to ask the right questions.
